Business Potential in the Coconut Industry
Kenya Coconut Development Authority (KCDA) developed fourteen (14) coconut products’ standards in conjunction with Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). In November 26th – 30th 2012, KCDA held a stakeholders workshop at Mombasa Beach Hotel for upscaling the Coconut Products’ Standards so that they may have both a national/international outlook. KEBS guided the process during the workshop. The standards discussed by stakeholders in the Coconut Industry were for the following products: Toddy, Vinegar, Coco syrup, Mature Nuts, Copra, Coconut milk / cream, Makuti (coconut leaves), Brooms, Coco wood, Coir fibre, Coir door mats, Tender coconut water and Coco peat. Export Promotion Council was represented by Coast Regional office during the workshop.
During the workshop, KCDA informed stakeholders on the new Coconut Levy as captured in Gazette Notice no. 165.  The notice captured registration fees, levies & permits for Toddy (mnazi wine); Importers, Exporters & Clearing agents; Processors; and Distributors. Levies on Exporters, Importers & Clearing agents are as follows available in the KCDA website on www.kcda.go.ke.

The Government through KCDA is encouraging planting of coconut trees by giving free coconut seeds to any person interested for planting of coconut nursery seedlings which KCDA will buy and distribute to farmers.

KCDA has been working with Kenya Industrial Estates (KIE) through an MOU where KIE is giving loans to those who are interested in doing business in the Coconut Industry. KCDA has also been working with KCB which recently gave grants of about Kshs 1.7 M to 6 groups; 3 groups in nursery seedlings and 3 groups doing value addition.

Export Promotion Council also works closely with KCDA by disseminating trade information, linkage to markets, Outreach visits and Export Trade Trainings to processors and farmer groups in the Coconut Industry.
