Advice to Farmers by KEPHIS
  • Have your soil tested to determine the type and quantity of fertilizer to use.
  • Have your water tested for irrigation suitability.
  • Buy farm inputs (seed, fertilizer) from licensed stockists.
  • Use certified seed of the right crop variety that is recommended for your area.
  • Should you notice any pests or diseases on your farm, seek advice on control options.
  • Ensure you have appropriate storage facilities for your produce.
  • Identify a market for your crop before planting.
  • Ensure that you have appropriate documentation from KEPHIS whenever importing or exporting materials.

 

Whenever buying seed, consider the following;

  • Purchase seed from licensed seed sellers and ensure you are given a receipt.
  • Buy seed only in official company containers/ packets
  • Do not buy seed sold in open containers or sold in open air markets
  • Seed is living and care should be taken especially consider the following;
    1. seed should not be stored in moist/damp or very hot conditions
    2. seed should be handled with care and not with dropped unnecessarily
    3. do not store seed for unnecessarily long periods of time (Max 1 yr for cereals and 6 months for vegetables)
  • Keep the seed package and receipt safely and use these documents for redress in case of suspect poor quality seed.
  • Report all cases of trade in illegal/ fake seed to the nearest KEPHIS office, Ministry of Agriculture Office or Police Station.
