However, it’s also defined as a {Microsoft Windows} program offering various {project management} tools

Useful in Setting up a project plan and schedule
Once you've finished your initial planning; use Microsoft Project to create and set up your project plan. You can then use Project's powerful features to more effectively manage your project.

Use Microsoft Project to manage your project
Project management is the discipline of planning, organizing, and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives.

Useful in creating interrelations/relationships between tasks/activities
After creating tasks in your project, MSP will help you link tasks across the project to show relationships between them. By linking tasks you create task dependencies.

Tracking and management of your Critical Path (CP)/tasks
The Critical Path is what ultimately determines the length of your project. It’s the series of tasks that will finish the latest in the project. Therefore MSP will enable you display the CP of your project. The Project manager will therefore pay close attention to the CP activities in case it’s important that the project has to finish on schedule i.e. avoid delaying the project.

Helpful in tracking and monitoring activities as they progress
One can easily identify a minor problem before it becomes major. Here corrective measures can be made i.e. in cases of over allocations and under allocations of resources and over budgeting of funds.

Using MSP in companies; it will be a convincing tool to the upper management that the project will make the company more successful. Using MSP tool; projects are well planned and tasks well allocated to meet/ achieve the company’s goals and objectives.
