Ban on importation of vegatative material or plantting material used in banana farming

The Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services (KEPHIS) informs the agriculture sector that  fusarium oxysporum f.sp cubense TROPICAL RACE 4 (TR4) disease causes considerable damage to cavendish clones growing under any conditions and some local varieties in areas where is has been introduced.

This is a fungal disease which was discoverd on a commercial farm in Monapo District, Nampula Province, Northern Mozambique early 2013. Countries which have been hit by the disease include; Taiwan(1976),Malyasia, Indonesia(1989), Australia’s Northern Territory (1997), mainland China (2001),Phillipines(2005), most recently Jordan and Mozambique(2013)

The fungus TR4 is a more virulent form of the pathogen .TR4 which commomnly speads through infected planting materials, soil and water. Once introduced it can persist in the soil soil for decades even in the absence of bananas. If not contained it may have a negative impact on the export industry, livelihood and food security of millions of people.
In an effort to safeguard introduction of this disease into the country,  the National Plant  Protection Organisation has hence fourth banned importation of any banana vegatative material except certified tissue culture materials/plantlets.
