Lamu County Export Potential
Lamu County is located in the Coast of Kenya covering a strip of north eastern coastal mainland and the Lamu Archipelago.  It constitutes two constituencies; Lamu West and Lamu East which include Lamu Island, Hindi, Witu, Mpeketoni and Kiunga.  The county headquarters is Lamu town. The geographical size of the county is about 6,273 km2 with a population of 101, 539. Lamu County boasts of rich Swahili architecture which has brought the world to its doorstep and is among the regions star attractions. Its preservation has been taken a notch higher by the United Nations decision to declare the region a World Heritage Site
Agricultural, livestock and fishing activities are the core of the economy in Mpeketoni, Lamu West and beyond where mangoes, bird eye chillies, cotton, amaranth, coconut and other crops are planted for both the local market and for export. Other products obtainable in the county are maize, sorghum, cowpeas, cassava, green grams, commercial crafts and furniture for export such as the Lamu door that is adorned with unique Swahili designs.
The products already being exported from Lamu County are Lamu doors, commercial crafts, cashew nuts, bird eye chilies, coconut products, bixa, fruits and vegetables, marine fish, cotton, livestock products and services such as tourism. Lamu County will soon be opened up for more export trading activities because of the commissioned building of Kenya’s second port in the Lamu corridor under the Lamu Southern Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) project. The Lamu corridor, as a transport and infrastructure project, when complete will be the country's second transport corridor. Kenya's other transport corridor is the Mombasa port and Mombasa – Uganda transport corridor that passes through Nairobi and much of the Northern Rift. The LAPSSET project will have the following components; a port at Manda Bay in Lamu, standard gauge railway line to Juba and Addis Ababa, a road network, oil pipelines in Southern Sudan and Ethiopia, oil refinery at Bargoni, three Airports and three resort cities in Lamu, Isiolo and Lake Turkana shores.
Export Promotion Council has conducted various programs for enterprises in Lamu  county such as Outreach programs, dissemination of export trade information, Product Development training, On-site coaching,  Export Production Villages (EPV) establishment, Export Readiness Assessments, Website Development for enterprises and soon will conduct the County Analysis Exercise.
