Potato Farmers opt to Sell Crop in Tanzania
Potato farmers in Narok are selling their produce in Tanzania where they say the crop is fetching good prices and there is consistent demand. A 110kg bag sells for an equivalent of KES. 6,000 in Tanzania while a 150kg bag in Kenya fetches KES. 2,500. Kenya lacks a packing standard for potatoes while in Tanzania the standard bag size is 120kgs.
According to ITC statistics Kenya’s exported potatoes (HS.Code 0701) worth USD 81,000 in 2012. The current export markets are Somalia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.  However Kenya is still a net importer of potatoes, in 2012, Kenya imported potatoes worth USD 339,000. The main suppliers of the potatoes to Kenya were U.K, France, Netherlands, Egypt and South Africa.
